Magnetic particle inspection of a ferrous component

Magnetic Particle Inspection

Detects surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon steel welds, castings, forgings, and lifting equipment.

Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) finds surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon and low-alloy steels. The part is magnetized and fine iron particles are applied to the surface; wherever a crack, seam, or lap interrupts the magnetic field, the particles gather and form a visible indication directly over the flaw.

MPI is fast, sensitive, and well suited to weld inspection, lifting and rigging gear, shafts, and other ferrous components. Depending on the application and required sensitivity, our technicians perform both visible dry-powder and wet fluorescent techniques, using AC yokes for surface indications or DC methods when subsurface detection is needed.

Precision NDT & Consulting, LLC performs magnetic particle inspection in the shop or in the field for refineries, petrochemical plants, marine, and oil & gas customers across the Gulf Coast. Our technicians hold certifications including ACCP Level II and ASNT Level III, and inspection reports are typically delivered the next business day.
