Phased array ultrasonic testing probe on a weld

Phased Array Ultrasonics (PA)

Advanced multi-element ultrasonics that electronically steers and focuses the sound beam for fast, detailed weld and corrosion imaging.

Phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) is an advanced form of ultrasonic inspection. Instead of a single transducer element, a phased array probe contains many small elements that are pulsed individually on a computer-calculated timing. This lets the technician electronically steer, sweep, and focus the sound beam through the material without moving the probe, producing detailed cross-sectional images of the weld or component in real time.

PAUT covers a large volume of material quickly and records fully encoded, auditable data. It is widely used as an alternative to radiography for weld acceptance — with no radiation hazard, no exclusion zones, and no interruption to surrounding work — and for corrosion mapping on piping and vessels.

Precision NDT & Consulting, LLC performs phased array ultrasonic testing in the shop or in the field for refineries, petrochemical plants, marine, and oil & gas customers across the Gulf Coast. Our technicians hold certifications including ACCP Level II and ASNT Level III, and inspection reports are typically delivered the next business day.
